AMELIA PELAEZ
born Las Villas 1869
died Havana 1968

A contemporary of Wifredo
Lam, Amelia studied with
Leopoldo Romanach. In
1927 she transferred to
Europe and established
herself in Paris and
later in 1933 returned to
Cuba. Aside from pottery
and painting she was also a
muralist whose best known
work is the mural at the
Havana Hilton, today the
Havana Libre. One of the
most famous and certainly
one of the most unique
Cuban artists, ever.
